Aglona lies in Latgale, in eastern Latvia, among lakes. At the end of the 17th century the Dominicans settled here, and in the 18th century they built a Baroque church with two towers, today a minor basilica. The main altar holds the image of Our Lady of Aglona.
Pilgrims from Latvia and neighbouring countries come to pray before the image and to draw water from the spring near the shrine. Pope St John Paul II visited Aglona in 1993, and Pope Francis in 2018.
The largest celebrations take place on the solemnity of the Assumption, 15 August, when many walking pilgrimages arrive. The nearest larger towns are Daugavpils and Rēzekne. During the feast it is advisable to plan accommodation in advance.
