Ars-sur-Formans is a small village in the Ain department, not far from Lyon. In 1818 John Mary Vianney came here as parish priest and served until his death in 1859. Canonised in 1925, he is the patron of parish priests. Beside the old parish church a basilica was built, where his body rests.
The holy Curé of Ars was known for his poverty, prayer and long hours in the confessional, to which crowds came from all over France. Pilgrims, especially priests and seminarians, come here to pray for renewal of faith, receive the sacrament of reconciliation and see the presbytery where he lived.
