The basilica stands on the plain below Assisi. It was built in the 16th and 17th centuries to shelter the small Porziuncola chapel, which Saint Francis restored with his own hands and where he understood his vocation. The first community of friars took shape here, and in 1212 Saint Clare received the habit here.
Pilgrims pray in the Porziuncola and in the Transitus chapel, where Francis died on the evening of 3 October 1226. The Porziuncola indulgence, known as the Pardon of Assisi, is linked to this place and, according to tradition, was requested by Francis himself. In the garden one can see thornless rose bushes linked to an old legend.
The Porziuncola indulgence falls on 1-2 August, and the celebrations of the Transitus and of Saint Francis on 3-4 October. The basilica is near Assisi railway station, a few kilometres from the old town.
