The convent was built in the 17th century, soon after Saint Teresa's canonisation in 1622, on the site of the house where she was born in 1515. The Baroque church is run by the Discalced Carmelites. Teresa, reformer of Carmel and author of mystical writings, was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970.
Pilgrims pray in the chapel built on the place of her birth and see mementos linked to the saint. Ávila allows visitors to follow Teresa's whole journey: they can also visit the Monastery of the Incarnation, where she lived for many years, and the Monastery of Saint Joseph, the first reformed Carmel she founded.
The feast of Saint Teresa is celebrated on 15 October, when Ávila holds festivities in her honour. The medieval walls and old town of Ávila are on the UNESCO list. The nearest large city is Madrid.
