Banneux is a small village in the province of Liège. In the winter of 1933, eleven-year-old Mariette Beco spoke of several encounters with Mary, who called herself the Virgin of the Poor. In 1949 the Bishop of Liège recognised the supernatural character of these events.
Pilgrims come to pray at the spring indicated during the apparitions and in the chapel built on the site of the encounters. The shrine has a special character for the sick and suffering, who entrust their concerns to Mary.
The nearest larger city is Liège. The main pilgrimage season falls in spring and summer, so before travelling it is worth checking the current programme of services on the shrine's official website.
