The basilica stands in the old town of Bari. In 1087 sailors from Bari brought here the relics of Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, and construction of the church began soon after. The Romanesque basilica became a model for many churches in Apulia. It is cared for by the Dominicans.
Pilgrims go down to the crypt, where the relics of the saint, venerated as protector of children, sailors and the poor, rest beneath the altar. The basilica has a special ecumenical significance: many Orthodox faithful come here, and services in the Eastern rite are also held in the crypt. Each year a liquid known as the manna of Saint Nicholas is collected from the tomb.
The main celebrations are the feast of the translation of the relics on 7-9 May and the feast of Saint Nicholas on 6 December. Before travelling, it is worth checking the current programme.
