The sanctuary stands on the Colle della Guardia above Bologna. The Byzantine icon of the Virgin and Child venerated here arrived, according to tradition, in the 12th century, and a pious legend attributes it to Saint Luke. The present Baroque basilica was built in the 18th century. A long covered portico, part of the porticoes of Bologna on the UNESCO World Heritage list, links it to the city.
Pilgrims climb under the arches of the portico, often praying the rosary, to pray before the icon, regarded as the protector of the city. The walk itself is a form of pilgrimage and prayer.
Since the 15th century, every year in the week before the solemnity of the Ascension, the icon is solemnly carried down to Bologna Cathedral and then returns to the sanctuary. Before setting out, it is worth allowing time for the climb and checking the current programme.
