Brezje is a village in Upper Carniola, in north-western Slovenia. In a chapel beside the parish church is the image of Mary Help of Christians (Marija Pomagaj), painted in the early 19th century by Leopold Layer. Since the late 19th century the shrine has been cared for by the Franciscans, and the church holds the title of minor basilica.
Pilgrims from all over Slovenia and abroad come to entrust their requests to Mary and to give thanks for graces received, as shown by many ex-votos. The shrine is regarded as Slovenia's national Marian shrine.
