The basilica stands on the Burg square in the historic centre of Bruges. It consists of two chapels: the lower, Romanesque Chapel of St Basil from the 12th century, and the upper chapel, rebuilt several times and richly decorated. According to tradition, the relic of the Holy Blood was brought to Flanders by Count Thierry of Alsace after the Second Crusade.

Pilgrims come to venerate the relic, kept in a crystal phial, and to pray before it in the quiet of the upper chapel. For many it is an opportunity to meditate on the Passion of Christ in a place where this devotion has continued since the Middle Ages.

The main event is the Procession of the Holy Blood, which passes through the streets of Bruges every year on Ascension Day and is inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
