The Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz stands on the castle hill of Caravaca de la Cruz in the region of Murcia. It keeps a reliquary with fragments of the True Cross, shaped as a cross with two transverse arms. According to tradition the cross appeared here miraculously in 1232. The present basilica dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Pilgrims come to venerate the Cross of Christ and to receive jubilee graces. Pope John Paul II granted Caravaca the right to celebrate a jubilee year every seven years, following the example of other great pilgrimage places.
In early May the town celebrates the feast of the Cross, with the rite of bathing the cross and the well-known race of the Wine Horses, Caballos del Vino, on 2 May. The nearest large city is Murcia. It is worth checking the sanctuary's programme before travelling.
