Saint Rita was born in nearby Roccaporena in the 14th century. She was a wife and mother, and after the death of her husband and sons she entered the Augustinian monastery of Cascia, where she lived until her death in 1457. Pope Leo XIII canonised her in 1900. The present basilica was built in the 20th century next to the monastery.

Pilgrims come to the saint's relics, displayed in the basilica, to entrust to her humanly hopeless situations, family difficulties and reconciliation. Visitors can also see the monastery where she lived and her native Roccaporena with places linked to her life.

The main celebration is the feast of Saint Rita on 22 May, when roses, the saint's symbol, are blessed. Cascia lies in the mountains of Umbria, and the nearest larger towns are Spoleto and Perugia.
