Covadonga lies in the Picos de Europa mountains in Asturias. Tradition links the place to the Battle of Covadonga at the beginning of the 8th century, in which Pelayo defeated Muslim forces, regarded as the symbolic start of the Reconquista. In a rock cave above a waterfall is a chapel with the statue of Our Lady, and nearby a neo-Romanesque basilica of pink stone was built in the 19th century.
Pilgrims come to the Holy Cave to pray before the statue of Our Lady of Covadonga, affectionately called La Santina, patroness of Asturias. The cave also holds the tomb of Pelayo. The sanctuary combines prayer with the beauty of the mountain landscape.
The feast of Our Lady of Covadonga is celebrated on 8 September. The nearest small town is Cangas de Onís, and the nearest larger city is Oviedo. Above the sanctuary lie the well-known Lakes of Covadonga.
