Ettal Abbey lies in an Alpine valley in Upper Bavaria, near Oberammergau. The monastery was founded in 1330 by Emperor Louis the Bavarian. The church's present form, with its monumental dome and rich Baroque interior, results from an 18th-century rebuilding. Benedictine monks still live in the abbey.
Pilgrims come to the marble statue of Our Lady with the Child, brought from Italy by the emperor according to tradition and venerated as the Ettal Madonna. For centuries Ettal has been a place of Marian prayer in the Alps, and also a stop for those visiting nearby Oberammergau, known for its Passion Play.
The nearest larger town is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Munich is about 90 km away. Before travelling, check the abbey's schedule of liturgy.
