Gietrzwałd is a village near Olsztyn with the Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the summer of 1877 two girls, Justyna Szafryńska and Barbara Samulowska, reported apparitions of Our Lady, who spoke to them in Polish. In 1977, on the centenary of the events, the Bishop of Warmia approved devotion to the apparitions.
Pilgrims come to pray before the miraculous image of Our Lady with the Child, crowned in 1967, and to pray the Rosary, to which Mary called. They also visit the nearby spring which, according to the accounts, Our Lady blessed, and the chapel by the maple tree where the apparitions took place.
The anniversaries of the apparitions are remembered in the summer months. Gietrzwałd is about 20 km from Olsztyn; before travelling, check the current programme of celebrations.
