According to tradition, the statue of Our Lady was found by the Guadalupe river by a shepherd to whom Mary appeared. In the 14th century King Alfonso XI founded a sanctuary here, and in 1389 the monastery was entrusted to the Hieronymites. Since 1908 it has been cared for by the Franciscans. The monastery complex, combining Gothic, Mudéjar and later elements, is on the UNESCO list.
Pilgrims come to the dark statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of Extremadura. The sanctuary played an important role in the age of exploration, and its name and devotion spread to the countries of Latin America. Its rich art collections include paintings by Zurbarán.
The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on 8 September, the Day of Extremadura. The monastery lies in the Villuercas mountains, far from large cities, so it is worth planning the journey in advance.
