Holywell lies in Flintshire, North Wales. According to tradition, in the 7th century the young Winefride (Gwenfrewi) was killed here by the prince Caradog, and a spring burst forth where her head fell. Her kinsman St Beuno is said to have restored her to life, and she later became a nun and abbess.
Pilgrims come to pray at the well, to bathe in the pool or wash with its water, asking for healing of soul and body. Over the spring stands a late Gothic chapel from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The devotion survived even the Reformation period.
The nearest larger city is Chester, on the English side of the border. Before travelling, it is worth checking current information about access to the pool and services in the shrine's official sources.
