Javier Castle in Navarre is a medieval fortress where Francis Xavier was born in 1506. Together with St Ignatius of Loyola he helped found the Society of Jesus, and then set out as a missionary to India, Japan and the Far East. He died in 1552 off the coast of China. Today the castle is cared for by the Jesuits.

Pilgrims come to pray at the birthplace of the patron of the missions and to entrust their vocations and the work of evangelisation to him. The castle chapel holds a Gothic crucifix known as the Christ of Javier, surrounded by a painted dance of death.

The main pilgrimage season is the Javieradas in early March, when thousands walk from Pamplona and all over Navarre. The saint's liturgical memorial falls on 3 December. The nearest large city is Pamplona.
