Kevelaer is a town in the Lower Rhine region, close to the Dutch border. According to tradition, in 1641-1642 the merchant Hendrick Busman heard a call to build a shrine here. A small print of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, modelled on the image venerated in Luxembourg, was placed in it.
Pilgrims pray before the image in the Chapel of Grace, as well as in the Candle Chapel, full of votive candles of pilgrim groups from many towns, and in the neo-Gothic Marian Basilica. Saint John Paul II visited the shrine in 1987. The faithful come here from Germany, the Netherlands and other countries.
The pilgrimage season traditionally runs from early May to early November. The nearest larger cities are Duisburg and Nijmegen; check the programme on the shrine's website before travelling.
