Saint Peter's Cathedral in Cologne is one of the best-known Gothic churches in Europe. Construction began in 1248 and was completed only in 1880. Since 1996 the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The heart of the cathedral is the Shrine of the Three Kings, containing the relics of the Magi, brought from Milan to Cologne in 1164. The new, grand cathedral was built precisely for them. Pilgrims also pray before the 10th-century Gero Cross and the statue of the Milan Madonna. In 2005 Cologne hosted World Youth Day.
A special time is the Solemnity of the Epiphany, 6 January. The cathedral stands right next to the main railway station; sightseeing may be restricted during services, so check current information.
