The Sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette lies high in the French Alps, in the Isère department. On 19 September 1846 two young shepherds, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, saw here a weeping Beautiful Lady who called for conversion, prayer and respect for Sunday. In 1851 the bishop of Grenoble recognised the apparition as worthy of belief.
Pilgrims come to pray for reconciliation with God and with others. The sanctuary is run by the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, a congregation founded in connection with the apparition and present in many countries. On site there is a basilica and statues recalling the course of the apparition.
