The Cathedral of Notre-Dame du Puy rises above the town of Le Puy-en-Velay in the Auvergne. It is a Romanesque church with clear Moorish influences and since the Middle Ages one of the important Marian sanctuaries of France. A statue of the Black Madonna is venerated here; the present one replaced the medieval statue burned during the Revolution. The cathedral is part of the UNESCO site of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
In 950 Bishop Godescalc of Le Puy set out from here for Santiago, one of the first known pilgrims from outside Spain. Today Le Puy is the start of the Via Podiensis, and pilgrims begin their journey with a morning blessing in the cathedral.
Le Puy celebrates a special jubilee when Good Friday falls on 25 March, the solemnity of the Annunciation, as in 2016. Before setting out, it is worth checking the current programme for pilgrims.
