The Sanctuary of Loyola lies in the valley between Azpeitia and Azkoitia in the province of Gipuzkoa. At its heart is the tower house of the Loyola family, where Ignatius was born in 1491. Around it stands a Baroque complex with a domed basilica, looked after by the Jesuits.
It was here that Ignatius, wounded at Pamplona, read the lives of the saints and the life of Christ during his recovery and underwent his conversion. In the tower house visitors can see the Chapel of the Conversion. Pilgrims come to discover the roots of Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises.
The memorial of St Ignatius falls on 31 July. Loyola is the starting point of the Camino Ignaciano, a route to Manresa following the path the saint travelled. The nearest larger cities are San Sebastián and Bilbao. It is worth checking the sanctuary's current programme before travelling.
