Maria Taferl is a village on a hill above the Danube valley in Lower Austria, near Melk. It is dominated by a twin-towered Baroque basilica built in the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The terrace in front of the church offers a wide view of the Danube and the Alpine foothills.
Pilgrims come to a small statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, a Pietà, which was placed on an oak tree here in the 17th century. According to tradition, after reported graces and healings the faithful began to come in great numbers, which led to the building of the church. To this day people pray before the statue, entrusting their sufferings to Mary.
The nearest larger town is Melk with its Benedictine abbey. Pilgrimages come mainly from spring to autumn; check the shrine's programme in advance.
