Máriapócs lies in north-eastern Hungary, not far from Nyíregyháza. According to accounts, in 1696 the icon of the Mother of God in the local Greek Catholic church wept for many days. The original was taken to Vienna, where it is kept in St Stephen's Cathedral, and in Máriapócs a copy is venerated, in connection with which similar events were reported in 1715 and 1905.
It is the principal shrine of the Greek Catholic Church in Hungary, also visited by Latin-rite Catholics. Pilgrims take part in the Byzantine liturgy and pray before the icon. Pope St John Paul II came here in 1991.
The nearest larger city is Nyíregyháza. As feasts and services follow the calendar of this Church, it is worth checking the programme on the official website in advance.
