Marija Bistrica lies in the Zagorje region, north of Zagreb. At the heart of the shrine is a wooden statue of the Mother of God with the Child, with a dark face, known as the Black Madonna. According to tradition, the statue was hidden during the time of the Ottoman threat, and its rediscovery strengthened the devotion.
It is Croatia's national Marian shrine, visited by parishes, families and groups from all over the country, often on foot. In 1998 Pope St John Paul II beatified Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac here. On the hill behind the basilica there is a Way of the Cross.
