The abbey on the hill above the town of Cassino was founded around 529 by Saint Benedict of Nursia. Here he wrote the Rule that shaped monastic life in the West. The monastery was destroyed several times, most recently in 1944 by bombing. Rebuilt, it was consecrated again in 1964 by Paul VI, who then proclaimed Saint Benedict patron of Europe.

Pilgrims pray at the tomb of Saint Benedict and his sister Saint Scholastica and join the liturgy of the Benedictine community. For Poles it is also a place of remembrance: on the slope lies the Polish War Cemetery with the graves of soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps who fought here in May 1944.

The solemnity of Saint Benedict falls on 11 July, and anniversary commemorations of the battle are held in May. The nearest town is Cassino, located between Rome and Naples.
