In Nevers on the Loire stands the former convent of Saint-Gildard, motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. In 1866 Bernadette Soubirous, to whom Mary had appeared at Lourdes in 1858, entered here. She lived a hidden religious life, often ill, and died here on 16 April 1879. She was declared a saint in 1933.
Pilgrims come to the convent chapel, where the body of St Bernadette rests in a glass reliquary. For many it completes a pilgrimage to Lourdes: a place to discover her everyday path of humility, obedience and suffering offered to God.
