O Cebreiro is a village high in the mountains, at the point where the Camino Francés enters Galicia. It preserves traditional round thatched houses known as pallozas and the pre-Romanesque church of Santa María a Real, one of the oldest surviving churches on the whole route.
Pilgrims are drawn by the tradition of a medieval Eucharistic miracle: according to the account, during a Mass celebrated by a doubting priest the host and wine became Flesh and Blood. The church keeps a chalice and paten associated with the event. The parish priest of O Cebreiro was Fr Elías Valiña, who began marking the Way with yellow arrows and is buried beside the church.
The climb to the village is one of the more demanding stages of the Camino, and mountain weather can change quickly, with fog and rain. The nearest larger cities are Lugo and Ponferrada.
