The sanctuary lies in the Alps above Biella in Piedmont. Tradition links its origins to the time of Saint Eusebius of Vercelli in the 4th century. Over the centuries a vast complex grew up, with the Ancient Basilica where the statue of the Black Madonna is venerated, the monumental Upper Basilica and the chapels of the Sacred Mountain, listed by UNESCO together with other Sacri Monti.
Pilgrims come to entrust themselves to Our Lady of Oropa, regarded as protector of Biella and the surrounding valleys. Many combine the pilgrimage with mountain walks and the silence of Alpine nature.
Since the 17th century the statue has been solemnly crowned every hundred years. The sanctuary is high in the mountains, so it is worth being prepared for changeable weather. The nearest larger town is Biella, and further away Turin.
