The Basilica of the Assumption and St Adalbert stands on the castle hill in Esztergom, above the Danube, opposite Štúrovo in Slovakia. Esztergom was one of Hungary's first capitals and, since the Middle Ages, the seat of the archbishops who are primates of the country. The present classicist church was built in the 19th century on the site of earlier cathedrals.

Pilgrims come to a place linked with the beginnings of Christianity in Hungary and with St Stephen, the country's first king. The basilica contains the Renaissance Bakócz Chapel, and Cardinal József Mindszenty rests in the crypt. St Adalbert is also a patron of the church.

Esztergom is about an hour's journey from Budapest and can easily be combined with a visit to Slovakia across the bridge over the Danube. It is worth checking current visiting times before travelling.
