Notre-Dame Cathedral, the cathedral of Our Lady, stands on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. Its construction began in 1163, and over the centuries it witnessed important moments in the history of the Church and of France. On 15 April 2019 a fire destroyed the roof and spire. After five years of restoration the cathedral reopened in December 2024.
Pilgrims come to pray in the cathedral of the archbishops of Paris and to venerate the relics of the Passion. The most important is the Crown of Thorns, brought to Paris by St Louis IX in the 13th century and exposed for public veneration on set days.
The cathedral receives very many visitors, so it is worth arriving early or checking whether entry can be booked in advance. Dates for veneration of the Crown of Thorns and the schedule of services are best checked on the cathedral's official website.
