The hospice stands on the Great St Bernard Pass, at about 2,470 m, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It was founded in the 11th century by Saint Bernard of Menthon to shelter travellers on the dangerous crossing of the Alps. It is still run by the Canons Regular of the Great St Bernard, and the story of the famous St Bernard dogs is linked to it.
Since the Middle Ages the pass has been on the route of pilgrims heading to Rome, known today as the Via Francigena. Pilgrims find lodging here, a praying community and the silence of the mountains. Saint Bernard of Menthon is the patron of mountaineers and Alpine inhabitants.
The road over the pass is usually open only in the summer months, and reaching it in winter requires mountain experience. The nearest towns are Martigny on the Swiss side and Aosta on the Italian side; book accommodation in advance.
