Rocamadour in the Lot department is a remarkable small town whose chapels and churches cling to a steep cliff above the Alzou valley. The sanctuary flourished from the 12th century, when the body of a hermit venerated as St Amadour was found here. The chapel of Our Lady holds a 12th-century wooden statue of the Black Madonna.
For centuries pilgrims came here, including kings, and the sanctuary was an important stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims traditionally climbed the great stairway to the sanctuary on their knees. After praying at Rocamadour the composer Francis Poulenc wrote the Litanies to the Black Virgin.
