The Basilica of Saint Mary Major stands on the Esquiline Hill. The present church was built in the 5th century under Pope Sixtus III, after the Council of Ephesus proclaimed Mary the Mother of God. It keeps its ancient mosaics, while later centuries added chapels, a bell tower and Baroque facades.

Pilgrims pray here before the icon Salus Populi Romani, venerated as the protector of Rome, and at the relic of the crib of Bethlehem. The basilica is on the route of the four major basilicas, and in jubilee years a Holy Door is opened here. In 2025 Pope Francis was buried here.

The anniversary of the basilica's dedication is kept on 5 August, recalling the legend of snow that, according to tradition, fell on the Esquiline in summer. Before visiting, it is worth checking the current schedule of services.
