According to an ancient tradition, Our Lady, while still living, came to the banks of the Ebro to the Apostle James, who was preaching the Gospel in Spain, and left him a pillar as a sign. Successive churches were built on this spot over the centuries. The present Baroque basilica, with its distinctive domes and towers, was built from the 17th century, and its domes include frescoes by Goya.
Pilgrims come to the chapel where a small statue of Our Lady stands on a jasper pillar. The faithful touch the pillar through an opening at the back of the chapel. Our Lady of the Pillar is patroness of Spain and of the Spanish-speaking world.
The main celebration is on 12 October, when Zaragoza holds the Fiestas del Pilar with the traditional offering of flowers in the square before the basilica. The basilica is in the city centre.
