At the end of August 1953 a plaster plaque of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, hanging in the home of a young married couple in Syracuse, shed tears for several days. Many witnesses observed the phenomenon, and in the same year the bishops of Sicily recognised the reality of the tears. To commemorate the event a distinctive cone-shaped basilica was built, which Pope John Paul II dedicated in 1994.
