Torreciudad stands on a hill above the El Grado reservoir in the province of Huesca. Since the Middle Ages there was a hermitage here with a Romanesque statue of Our Lady. Saint Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, born in nearby Barbastro, was brought here as a child by his parents and offered to Mary in thanksgiving for his healing. At his initiative a new shrine was built and opened in 1975.
