The shrine stands on Trsat hill above Rijeka, next to a medieval castle. According to tradition, at the end of the 13th century the Holy House of Nazareth rested here for some time before reaching Loreto. Since the 15th century the shrine has been cared for by the Franciscans.
Pilgrims pray before the icon of Our Lady of Trsat, which tradition says was given by Pope Urban V. The church and the votive chapel contain many ex-votos, including some from sailors and their families. Pope St John Paul II visited the shrine in 2003.
Historic stairs lead up the hill from the centre of Rijeka, and many treat the climb as part of their pilgrimage. An important day is the Assumption of Mary, 15 August. It is worth checking the current programme before travelling.
