The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin was built at the end of the 15th century and is the city's only major Renaissance church. In the 17th century the Baroque Chapel of the Shroud, designed by Guarini, was added. After a fire in 1997 the cloth was saved, and today it is kept in a special case in a side area of the cathedral.
Pilgrims come to pray before the Shroud, a linen cloth bearing the image of a tortured man, which many faithful associate with the burial of Jesus. The Church has not pronounced definitively on its authenticity, but encourages its veneration as a sign leading to meditation on the Passion of Christ. Since 1983 it has belonged to the Holy See.
The Shroud is shown to the public only during periodic expositions announced in advance, so before travelling it is worth checking the archdiocese's announcements.
