Vierzehnheiligen is a hilltop shrine above the Main valley near Bad Staffelstein in Upper Franconia. The present basilica was built in 1743-1772 to designs by Balthasar Neumann and is one of the most important works of late Baroque and Rococo in Germany. Across the valley stands the former Banz Abbey.
According to tradition, in 1445-1446 the shepherd Hermann Leicht saw here the Child Jesus surrounded by fourteen children, who introduced themselves as the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Pilgrims pray at the altar of grace standing on the site of the apparitions, entrusting their worries and illnesses to the saints' intercession. The shrine is run by the Franciscans.
