The Gate of Dawn is the only surviving gate of the old city walls of Vilnius, built in the early 16th century. In the chapel above the passage, cared for by the Discalced Carmelites, is a 17th-century painting of Our Lady of Mercy, crowned with papal crowns in 1927.

Pilgrims pray before the image both in the chapel and from the street beneath the gate, from where it can be seen through a window. In 1935 the image of Divine Mercy, painted according to the instructions of St Faustina, was displayed in public for the first time at the Gate of Dawn. Pope St John Paul II prayed here in 1993.

The main celebration is the feast of Our Lady of Mercy in November, observed over a whole week. The Gate of Dawn is in the Old Town, close to the railway station.
