The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, the Good Jesus of the Mount, rises on a wooded hill above Braga in northern Portugal. Its symbol is the zigzagging Baroque stairway with chapels depicting scenes of the Passion and fountains of the Five Senses and the Three Virtues. The Neoclassical church at the top was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 2019 the complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The stairway is conceived as a spiritual path towards Christ: pilgrims climb it in prayer, sometimes in a spirit of penance. A historic funicular powered by a water counterweight also runs to the top.
