The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Chartres, about 90 km south-west of Paris, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The present building was largely raised in the few decades after the fire of 1194. It has kept most of its medieval stained glass, and a 13th-century labyrinth lies in the floor of the nave. Since 1979 the cathedral has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Since the Middle Ages Chartres has been a Marian sanctuary. It keeps a relic known as the Veil of Mary, the Sancta Camisa, given according to tradition by Charles the Bald in the 9th century. Pilgrims come to pray to Our Lady, and many walk the labyrinth as a sign of spiritual pilgrimage.
Around Pentecost walking pilgrimages go from Paris to Chartres, with many young people taking part. Before travelling, it is worth checking the programme on the sanctuary's website.
