Croagh Patrick is a cone-shaped mountain near the town of Westport in County Mayo, rising above Clew Bay. According to tradition, St Patrick spent forty days on its summit in fasting and prayer. A small chapel stands at the top, and for centuries the mountain has been a destination for pilgrims.
The climb has a penitential character: many pilgrims stop at the traditional prayer stations, and some make the ascent barefoot. The walk is an opportunity for prayer, silence and examination of conscience in the spirit of the Apostle of Ireland.
The main pilgrimage takes place on the last Sunday of July, known as Reek Sunday. The path is steep and stony and the weather changeable, so good footwear, rainwear and a check of the forecast before setting out are essential.
