Knock is a village in County Mayo in the west of Ireland. On the evening of 21 August 1879, a group of local people of different ages saw at the gable wall of the parish church the figures of Mary, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, together with an altar and a Lamb. The witnesses prayed for a long time in the rain, and their testimonies were recorded.
Pilgrims pray at the Apparition Chapel and in the basilica, receive the sacrament of reconciliation and entrust the sick to Mary. Pope St John Paul II visited the shrine in 1979, and Pope Francis in 2018.
The anniversary of the apparition, 21 August, draws many faithful. The nearest airport is Ireland West Airport Knock. Before travelling, it is worth checking the current programme on the shrine's official website.
