The Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Gniezno stands on Lech Hill, in one of the oldest centres of the Polish state. In the year 1000, during the Congress of Gniezno, the first Polish metropolitan see was established here. The first kings of Poland were crowned in the cathedral, and it remains the seat of the Primate of Poland. It is known for the Romanesque Gniezno Doors from the 12th century.

Pilgrims come to the relics of Saint Adalbert, bishop and martyr, who was killed in 997 during a mission among the Prussians. His silver coffin rests in the chancel of the cathedral.
