The Hill of Crosses is a small hill, a former hillfort, about 12 km north of Šiauliai. The custom of placing crosses here became established in the 19th century, probably after the uprisings of 1831 and 1863, when families commemorated relatives who had disappeared. Today there are tens of thousands of crosses, crucifixes and rosaries of all sizes.
In Soviet times the authorities destroyed the crosses several times, but the faithful put them back, so the place became a symbol of faith and peaceful resistance. Pope St John Paul II celebrated Mass here in 1993. A Franciscan hermitage stands nearby. Pilgrims often leave a cross of their own with a prayer intention.
The hill is in open country and accessible all year round. The nearest town is Šiauliai, from where it is easiest to travel by car or with an organised trip.
