Ludźmierz is a village near Nowy Targ with the Basilica of the Assumption. The parish dates back to the 13th century, when Cistercians settled here. The sanctuary is one of the oldest centres of Marian devotion in Podhale and is dear to the highlanders.
Pilgrims come to the Gothic statue of Our Lady with the Child, called the Lady of the Highlands (Gaździna Podhala). The statue was crowned in 1963 by Primate Stefan Wyszyński in the presence of Archbishop Karol Wojtyła. John Paul II visited Ludźmierz in 1997. Beside the sanctuary is a Rosary garden that invites prayer.
The main feast falls on the Solemnity of the Assumption, 15 August. Ludźmierz is a few kilometres from Nowy Targ and not far from Zakopane; check the schedule of services before travelling.
