Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky island in a bay on the border of Normandy and Brittany, surrounded by some of the strongest tides in Europe. According to tradition, in 708 St Aubert, bishop of Avranches, built a sanctuary here at the request of the Archangel Michael. A Benedictine abbey has stood here since the 10th century. The site and its bay are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Pilgrims come to honour St Michael the Archangel, protector in spiritual combat. Since 2001 the life of prayer in the abbey has been carried on by the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem, whose liturgy visitors can join.
The feast of St Michael falls on 29 September. Crossing the bay on foot at low tide is a tradition, but because of the fast incoming tide and quicksand it should only be done with a licensed guide. The nearest towns are Avranches and Rennes.
