Pontmain is a small village in the Mayenne department, on the border of Brittany and Normandy. On the evening of 17 January 1871, during the Franco-Prussian War, as troops approached the region, a group of children saw Our Lady in the sky. Words appeared in the sky calling for prayer and assuring that God would soon answer. As early as 1872 the bishop of Laval recognised the apparition.

Pilgrims come to Our Lady of Hope to entrust to her difficult situations, their families and peace. A Neo-Gothic basilica was built in memory of the apparition, and the village preserves places connected with the event, including the former Barbedette barn.
